Types of Face Masks and How they protect Covid-19

At the beginning of Covid-19, people did not know about the importance of face masks. The symptoms were unknown at that time and it was unsure whether the face masks help in prevention or not. With the rapid outbreak of Covid-19, several types of research have done so far showing the effectiveness of face masks in the protection of this pandemic.

Do you wonder what types of face masks are out there and which one protects the most?

Undoubtedly, face masks protect the Covid-19 along with other protective measures such as social distancing and hand hygiene. However, different types of face masks offer protection to a different extent.

Types of Face Masks and Protection Levels

When it comes to the types of face masks, there are primary three types of face mask out there. Keep scrolling down to learn what makes each type different from each other and the level of protection they provide.

N95 Respirators

Being one of the most effective in the protection against Covid-19, N95 respirators are limited in stock. In addition to the huge particles, splashes, and spray, these highly fitted masks also filter out 95 percent of the small particles. These masks are made up of tangled fibers that are highly effective in pathogen filtration. N95 respirators should meet the filtration standards set by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Due to the tense condition out there in the healthcare sectors, N95 respirators should only be available to the doctors and nurses as they are at more exposure to danger. People with mild symptoms should prefer a disposable face mask for protection measures.

Surgical Masks

Premium Quality Corona Virus Face Masks

Due to the widespread of the Covid-19, a disposable face mask is the common type of available mask out there. Surgical masks contain synthetic fabric that helps you in comfortable breathing. Commonly known as a medical mask, it is a loose-fitting disposable face mask that protects your nose and face contacting with droplets and splashes that may contain germs. These types of masks help in the filtration of the large particles in the air. While you’re wearing a surgical mask, other people are more likely to be at least exposure to danger because it reduces the transmission of infectious respiratory secretions.

Surgical masks are designed for healthcare workers for prevention during surgery. But, due to the outbreak of this pandemic, these masks are commonly used by the people. Different types of surgical masks are available but make sure to use 3 layers or 3 ply surgical masks.

3 Layers or 3 Ply Surgical Mask

Keep in mind that ordinary surgical masks are not as effective in prevention as 3 layer face mask. This mask is made up of 3 layers that protect the user against getting infected. These layers include an outer non-woven hydrophobic layer, a middle melt-blown layer, and an inner soft absorbent non-woven layer. An outer layer repels the water, blood, and body fluids, the middle helps in the filtration process of germs and the inner absorbs water and sweat.

Filter or Sponge Masks

During the peak times of this pandemic, the excessive shortage of available protective gear resulted in the homemade filter or sponge masks. These masks are better than having nothing in such a worse situation where protective supplies are limited. Unlike surgical masks, these masks are not disposable and can be used 10-15 times. Such masks can still provide protection against germs when you’re in public places.

Homemade face masks

Homemade cloth face masks can be effective in the protection against this pandemic. Due to the limited supply of surgical masks and N95 respirators, the health organizations expect those people without symptoms to use at least homemade face masks. These face masks are reliable in a public place where it becomes difficult to keep social distancing. These masks offer the least protection however it is suitable only for those people who lack Covid-19 symptoms luckily. Homemade face masks can be made into 3 ply face mask having the same functionalities as the 3 layer surgical masks.

As discussed above, face masks have become necessities in such a hectic situation. Make sure to follow the health guidelines to keep yourself safe and sound. If you’re showing any symptoms of Covid-19, ensure wearing any type of face mask depending on the extent of the symptoms.
